SUFFOLK hockey ace Harry Martin said his side are aiming for a gold medal after they kicked off their Olympics in style with a 4-1 win over Argentina on Monday night.

In front of a packed Riverbank Arena, the Brits came roaring out of the blocks, having a goal disallowed on video referral inside the first six minutes of the contest.

And it did not take long for the first goal to arrive, skipper Barry Middleton firing home to put the home side a goal to the good at the break.

A second for Middleton, as well as strikes from Richard Smith and Dan Fox then sealed the victory before a late Argentina consolation salvaged some pride.

And for Martin, who is the youngest member of the men’s hockey team and was making his Games debut, the day could not have gone much better.

“We could not have asked for a more perfect start be quite honest,” he said.

“This is my first Olympics and to play in front of that crowd was the most special game I have ever been involved in.”

Next up for Team GB in their group are South Africa on Wednesday, but the acid tests for the home favourites will come against Australia and Spain, silver and bronze medallists from Beijing four years ago.

And Martin stressed that he and his team-mates were taking it one step at a time as they bid to claim their first hockey gold since Seoul in 1988.

“South Africa next will be tough game,” he added. “They are a good, fit side who will definitely work us hard but we’re confident that we can come away with the win.

“We want to be in the semi-finals because that’s where the medals happen and that’s what we’re aiming for, preferably gold.”
