Long-serving Ipswich stalwart Milton leaves the Blues after 30 years

Part of the playing squad that won promotion to the inaugural Premier League in 1992, Milton served the club for three decades, most recently as their director of academy sales, having initially joined as a player from Bury Town, in 1987.

Revealing his move in the latest Town academy newsletter, Milton said: “I have decided that the time is right for me to leave my position as director of academy sales.

“This is not a decision I have taken lightly but one which I feel is right for me at this time.

“I will be very sad to leave the club after 30 years but will still attend home matches supporting the team and meeting up with you all in the new season.

“I am waiting for confirmation on how my existing role will be filled and I will let you know as soon as it has been agreed.”

Town managing director Ian Milne paid tribute to Milton in a statement. He said: “Simon Milton has decided to leave the club at the end of this month to take up a new challenge.

“He has been a fantastic and loyal servant to the club, firstly as a player for 11 years and then for another 19 years working on the commercial side.

“There is no doubt he will be missed and everyone at the club wishes him every success for the future.

“We do hope to see him back at Portman Road next season though, supporting Mick and the players.”

Milton joined Town as a player in 1987, being signed by John Duncan, having initially been spotted, taken on trial and offered a professional contract by Bobby Ferguson.

The Fulham-born midfielder soon became a fans’ favourite and went on to score 56 goals in 330 league and cup appearances for Town.

Meanwhile, former Town loanee Jonny Williams has signed a contract extension with Premier League side, Crystal Palace, until the summer of 2019. Williams made eight appearances on loan at Portman Road last season – a campaign disrupted by a host of injuries, an issue which has blighted his career.
