Rider power won the day, causing tonight’s Championship fixture betwen the Ipswich Witches and Glasgow to be called off without a wheel having been turned, writes Steve Waller.
The postponement, which came around 8pm, led to Witches promoter Chris Louis shaking his head in frustration, after working tirelessly with track staff to get the meeting on.
Heavy rain from late morning until around 3pm had left the track wet, but after extensive work the former world number three and two time British champion was adamant that the track was not only rideable but perfectly raceable.
Louis who walked the track with another former Foxhall favourite and star of the sport, Jeremy Doncaster, said: “The riders wanted something done with the third and fourth bends and when we started it made things a whole lot worse, which with heavy machinery was naturally going to happen, but we sorted it out and they still didn’t want to ride it.
“I’m a rider of 25 years experience and Donc (Jeremy Doncaster) probably has more and we are both flabbergasted.
“I totally understand that the bikes are difficult to ride but you have to adapt. Sure there may have been some inconsistency but the bit that the riders complained about we sorted out and it’s probably slicker now than our riders would like it.
“I’m gutted for the fans, our fans, but also for the few Glasgow fans that have come all this way and then stood around. I’m embarrassed because if I’d made a poor decision earlier in the day to continue then I’d put my hands up and say I got it wrong, the track’s not fit – but I didn’t and the track is fine.
“OK they weren’t happy with one bit and I agree with them, but we got on and dealt with it ahead of the slightly delayed start time of 8pm.
“Certainly it was Glasgow who were the more unhappy early on, but I think they affected our lads in the end. I just don’t understand it”.
As yet there is no date for the clash to be re-staged.
