MILDENHALL Fen Tigers continue their defence of the National Trophy when they take on the Buxton Hitmen at West Row, with co-promoter Chris Louis warning they must not be underestimated.

“When the teams for 2012 were confirmed a lot of people thought Buxton would be the side that would struggle. Proving that to be wrong is the biggest incentive you can have and that’s something we’ll be hammering home to our boys before we start.”

Louis continued, “In Charles Wright they have an excellent Number One and, although he is the oldest rider in the league, Tony Atkin knows the quickest away around West Row as he proved when he was at Stoke last year. Adam McKinna can score heavily, and when you add Tyler Govier, who had ridden here a lot in the juniors, you can suddenly see what I mean about them being a possible banana skin for us.

“Some of the most entertaining meetings of the season last year featured Buxton, including, of course, The Pairs.”

After a quiet start to the season, Sunday’s meeting marks the start of a busy week for the Fen Tigers, who have home and away clashes with the Isle of Wight in the National Trophy and a trip to Coventry in the first leg of their Knock Out Cup tie.

“It’s going to be a busy week, but that’s not a bad thing at all,” said Louis. “As well as the guys who had already hit form, Aaron (Baseby) is starting to pick up points and, showing what a great team spirit we have, Armo and his mechanic Phil have helped sort out Stefan (Nielsen’s) mechanical problems, which will give him a boost as well. We want to hang on to the Trophy and the KO Cup and can go a long way to achieving that over the next week.”
