Lowestoft Town have vowed to act in ‘the firmest possible way’ after it was alleged a fan racially abused an opposition player during a Suffolk derby clash on Easter Monday.

Leiston goalkeeper Ashlee Jones, a former Lowestoft player, claimed that he was abused during the Trawlerboys’ 2-1 win at Victory Road.

Jones took to Twitter after the game to share his anger at the alleged incident, which marred an exciting and competitive derby clash between the Suffolk rivals.

In a statement, the Trawlerboys said: “The club are currently investigating two separate incidents that took place at yesterday’s away match at Leiston.

“The first of these incidents were racist remarks made towards Leiston goalkeeper and ex-Trawlerboy, Ashlee Jones.

“As a club we DO NOT and WILL NOT condone any forms or racist behaviour and are urging the person in question to be responsible for their actions and come forward.

“We are also urging anyone with information to please contact us immediately, so that the club can deal with this in the appropriate manner.”

The statement continued: “Lowestoft Town Football Club will not tolerate racism, homophobia, violence, etc in any shape or form and will deal with such actions in the firmest possible way.

“As a club we share in the disappointment and anger that Ashlee Jones is feeling and can only apologise to him for the actions of someone who has attached themselves with our club on this occasion.

“The culprit has no place in our club, football or life and we will do everything in our power to bring this person to justice.”

In the statement, Lowestoft also alleged that one of their players, Harry Barker, was assaulted after the game.

Leiston chairman Andy Crisp confirmed the Blues would not be commenting on the alleged incident until the club were aware of all the facts.

The EADT has approached the Football Association for comment and are awaiting a response.

Suffolk Police confirmed it had not been made aware of either of the alleged incidents.
