COLCHESTER United could be in line to sign defender Alan Maybury, even though the transfer window does not re-open until January.

Maybury is a free agent, and so the U's could secure his signature at any time, following the 30-year-old's successful trial period at the Community Stadium.

The ex-Leeds, Hearts and Leicester full-back enjoyed a run-out in Tuesday night's Essex Senior Cup tie against Romford, which ended in a 6-2 win.

Manager Paul Lambert revealed: “Alan (Maybury) really coasted through the game.

“I know what he can do. He's a fit lad and a very good professional, and I'll be speaking to him today.

“The game against Romford was too easy for him. I've been looking at him for a week or so. He's an international who has played at a high level at Leicester and also in Scotland.”

Dubliner Maybury has earned 10 caps for the Republic of Ireland, and played more than 100 games for both Hearts and Leicester. He ended last season on loan at Aberdeen.
