Ipswich Town striker David McGoldrick has departed the Republic of Ireland squad prematurely, but has not picked up a fresh injury.

The 29-year-old was substituted in the second half of the Blues’ 3-1 home defeat to Bristol City with a tight hamstring, but still joined up with the Ireland squad for their crunch World Cup qualifiers and was given the green light to train following a scan.

He was left out of the matchday squad entirely as Ireland recorded a vital 2-0 home win over Moldova last Friday night, ex-Town man Daryl Murphy netting both goals, and has been released from international duty ahead of tonight’s crucial match with Wales in Cardiff.

James McCarthy (Everton) and Jonny Hayes (Celtic) have also been allowed to return to their clubs.

• McGoldrick keen to make up for lost time with Ireland

McGoldrick has been in fine form for Town at the start of this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in 10 appearances.

Meanwhile, Blues midfielder Tristan Nydam was unable to join up with the England U19 squad due to a groin injury.

Mick McCarthy’s men travel to third-placed Sheffield United for a Championship clash on Saturday, with the East Anglian derby against Norwich City at Portman Road coming the following Sunday.
