Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy says he is not bothered if the transfer window is made shorter next season, despite a dramatic and ultimately frustrating deadline day for the Blues last week.

Premier League clubs today voted to close next summer’s transfer window before the season starts to avoid disruption in the opening weeks of the campaign. Football League chiefs have indicated they could follow suit, but require further dialogue with stakeholders before a decision is made.

McCarthy saw a loan deal for Brighton centre-back Connor Goldson fall through last Thursday and was left scrambling to sign Everton teenager Callum Connolly on a temporary basis instead.

“I’m not bothered if they all want to change the rules,” said the Blues boss. “People want to change it to suit themselves, but I’m not convinced it will suit them. One or two might not be happy when they spend their entire summer holidays doing deals!

“I understand the reason why, of course I do. You get your squad sorted for the start of the season and then nothing else can happen. We wouldn’t have all these upsets where big players think they can put pressure on clubs and move on.

“Maybe I am being selfish because I didn’t have all that. As always, whatever gets thrown at me I’ll deal with it.”

Lifting the lid on what happened on deadline day with Goldson, McCarthy said: “It was stressful for Connor. I feel really sorry for him because he’d committed to come here, despite loads of other people being in his ear hole trying to convince him to go here there and everywhere.

“Fair play to Chris Hughton at Brighton, to Connor and to Simon Kennedy his agent, because they stuck with us. Brighton had their player in, but then the club they were getting him from had a centre-back go down injured.

“Connor was here, he’d signed the forms, he’d got a squad number and was ready to go, but Brighton couldn’t do the deal because they couldn’t get their own centre-half. It’s nobody’s fault.

“In the end I was made aware of Callum. To be honest we were going to take them both. That’s the full story.”

He added: “There was absolutely zero interest for any of my players, which amazes me.

“There were a few agents touting certain individuals around at the beginning of the window, but that’s all it was – some people being mischievous.

“They forget that I have the numbers of all the people that are supposedly interested. I tend to pick the phone up and ask them directly ‘are you interested?’ They say ‘no’ and that’s cleared up.”
