Mildenhall chalked up two more wins over the Bank Holiday weekend to make it seven in a row, extending their lead at the top of Division One of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship to 28 points.

Second-placed Wivenhoe, who extended their winning start to the season to six games with victory over Mistley, remain hot on their heels.

Mildenhall accounted for Copdock & OIs by 69 runs on Saturday and then saw off Maldon in a rearranged match on Monday by seven wickets.

A light rain had spiced up the Wamil Way wicket on Saturday and Copdock chose to bowl first.

Dean Carolus and James East produced some hostile deliveries and after the early loss of Alex Reynolds, who was caught behind, Joe Reed and Ben Shepperson made slow progress.

Reed, who has been in prolific form since moving to Mildenhall, suffered a thigh strain but continued with a runner until he was caught down the leg side off Carolus for 47.

Wickets fell and at 144 for five with nine overs left Andy Squire led a spirited conclusion to the innings with 38 off 19 balls. James East, having sent down 10 overs for 23, ended with 76 from his 14 overs.

Reuben Sharpe (59) and Hugh Thomas (29) added 89 in 15 overs but once the latter fell with the total on 103 the rest of the innings subsided to 156 all out, Tymal Mills claiming five for 43.

On Monday Maldon chose to bat, immediately lost a wicket, and then had a century partnership between Mark Gozzett (92) and Jimmy Ainscough (63). But three middle-order wickets for AJ Warraich, including Gozzett caught behind, limited the visitors to 187 for nine.

Mildenhall always had an eye on the weather and scored briskly. After the opening partnership had been broken by a run-out after a mix-up, Joe Reed went on to score an aggressive 70 and captain Steve Lankester hit out as the rain fell and ended on 67 not out as Mildenhall completed a seven-wicket win in the 24th over.

Wivenhoe, unfortunately, were one of the few teams who failed to register their scores on the SportStatz site but beat Mistley by a comfortable 94-run margin.

Woolpit found another century-maker when they needed him against bottom team Abberton. At 114 for five, with the league’s leading runscorer Andy Northcote out for a duck, Jim Whiteman led them to a winning total of 250 for eight by scoring 126 not out. Richard Moxon’s 76 helped Abberton to reach 196 for six in reply.

Ipswich only managed 134 for nine at Exning Park, and the home team were led to a three-wicket win by Tim Catley, who finished unbeaten on 48.

Trevor Moulton (60) and Rob Everson (41) led the way as Frinton posted 210 for six against Coggeshall, and despite 92 not out from Robert Cross the visitors were bowled out for 183.

Chris Silverwood again had a big part to play in Haverhill’s win over Maldon. But this time the former Yorkshire and England bowler played a key role with the bat, not the ball.

Simon Youngs (four for 25), Rajan Singh (three for 23) and Joe Woodley (three for 26) bowled the home team out for 104, but at 55 for six Haverhill looked to be in trouble. Then Silverwood (32 not out) carried them to a three-wicket success.

Doug Harris (48), Daniel White (41), Jon Butcher (34) and Josh Elliott (33) all chipped in as Elmstead Grasshoppers posted 257 for eight against East Bergholt in Division Two. White then grabbed five for 36 to send the visitors packing for 110 as Elmstead extended their winning start to the season.

Lakenheath stayed on their tail with a one-wicket win at Dunmow. In reply to 208 it took Adam Horrex (23 not out) to add 28 runs for the last two wickets with Dale Wilderspin (12 before being run out) and Tom Dupe (four not out) to secure victory.

Third-placed Hadleigh had no such problems as James Gilderson (five for 17) and Murray Spence (four for 56) bowled Brightlingsea out for 80 and Tim Rix avoided any embarrassments in reply with 34 to set up a seven-wicket win.

Ipswich & East Suffolk tied with Brockley as James Barker, having helped to add 13, was caught by Dean Sykes off Jack Brame with three balls of the final over left.
