An in-form Steve Taylor struck 117 as Mildenhall secured a victory over fourth-placed Wivenhoe, to stay second in Division One of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship, with seven wins from eight games.

The Suffolk hosts reached 251 for six. In addition to Taylor’s first Saturday century of the season, Ben Shepperson contributed 52. Wivenhoe, who had won five of their first seven matches, were then bowled out for 231 to lose by just 20 runs, despite a half-century from New Zealander Dean Robinson (57), and also Taylor’s inability to bowl or field because of a recurring hamstring injury. One highlight was a spectacular catch by Karl Holmes, to remove danger-man Ryan Savill. Holmes took the catch off Steve Lankester’s bowling, leaping three or four paces to his right to grab the ball inches off the ground. Lankester ended with figures of four for 61, including the important wicket of Robinson. Mildenhall’s season could be defined in the next couple of weeks, as they take on title rivals Witham and Sudbury.
