DAVID Miller and Tamara Jordan completed a hat-trick of Friday Five Series victories, following their respective wins at the Kirton five-mile race.

But Miller, of Woodbridge Shufflers, was pushed a little harder this time around, thanks to a strong run from James Calvert, a recent recruit at Ipswich JAFFA.

Calvert ran shoulder-to-shoulder with Miller for the first three miles of this fast course, with both athletes going through the three-mile mark in 15 minutes exactly.

Miller then began to gradually pull clear to win in 25mins 23secs, which was just 10 seconds adrift of his personal best time, set at Canvey Island two months ago.

It was Miller's third Kirton title, and win number 183 in his career.

Calvert's presence helped to push Miller to his fastest time over the Kirton course, 26 seconds faster than his effort from eight years ago.

He also won in 2005.

Calvert, a former member of Ipswich Harriers, was only 16 seconds behind Miller in second spot, with Stowmarket Striders' Roger Aldis enjoying an excellent run with 26.56 in third position.

The JAFFA double act of Robert Chenery (fourth) and Gavin Davies

(fifth) again ran well, as did leading junior Michael Cripps, of West Suffolk AC. He was sixth in 27.37.

Peter Golding, of Saint Edmund Pacers, ducked under 28 minutes to finish the leading veteran. Other veteran accolades went to Lowestoft's Kevin Sharman (over-40), Stowmarket's Chris Starmer (over-45), JAFFA's Ray Hill (over-55) and Felixstowe Road Runners' Ray Roberts (over-60).

Jordan, meanwhile, was more than two minutes clear of the field in the ladies' race. The Stowmarket Strider posted a winning time of 29.19, which was 12 seconds quicker than her time from the previous week's Bury Friday Five. She was only beaten by 18 men.

Like Miller, she has now won all three events in the Series, at Ipswich, Bury and Kirton, with two races to come at Stowmarket (Haughley Park) and Great Bentley.

JAFFA's Natasha Belsom was second in 31.30, just 17 seconds ahead of third-placed Jemma Clarry, of the Pacers. Clarry, who had also finished third at Bury, was again the leading female junior.

Chelmsford AC's Annette Oakman was the top veteran (over-35), and there were age group victories for Stowmarket's Mary Narey (over-40), the Pacers duo of Maureen McCarthy (over-45) and Pat Partridge (over-55), and Colchester & Tendring AC's Diane Wooler (over-50).

McCarthy actually pipped Fran Norris to the over-45 title by just one second in an exciting finish. But Norris had the consolation of setting a Colchester Harriers over-45 club record of 34.13.

The event was organised by Felixstowe Road Runners and sponsored by Family Amusements, with an impressive 427 finishers. The next race in the Series is at Haughley Park on Friday, June 27 (7.45pm start).

There will be a supporting junior run at 7.15pm.
