The deadline day signing from Nottingham Forest was an unused substitute at Sunderland on Saturday but could make his debut this weekend when Championship basements boys Burton Albion visit Portman Road.

Carayol found minutes hard to come by before leaving the City Ground, making just two starts this season, but is hopeful his pace and ability to run at defenders will shine through when he gets a chance in the Ipswich first-team.

Asked about what Blues fans can expect when he finally gets on the pitch, Carayol said: “Pace, I can get a goal and I’m good in one-on-one positions.

“I always want to take people on and if the gaffer wants me to play in that way, as an out and out winger, then I’m sure you will see some good performances.

“The manager’s not really said too much but obviously I’ve spoken to him in the past so I kind of know what he wants from me.

“I can play anywhere across the three up front so for me I want to just play games. If he tells me to play at right back then I will go and play at right back.

“I just want to enjoy my football, that’s the most important thing and hopefully I can do it here and the fans can see what I can do.

“Once I get that run of games, get that sharpness and that chemistry with the team then I back my ability to put in good performances.

“As an attacking player it’s been hard for me this season because I’ve been in and out and you doubt yourself.

“They say your prime is around 29 so we’ll see. The gaffer has wanted me for a long time so I want to repay his faith and hopefully he will want to keep me longer.”

The move to Suffolk takes Carayol’s career tally to 12 clubs, with his four-year spell at Middlesbrough the most fruitful of his career to date.

Had it not been for a nasty knee injury in 2014, Carayol believes he could still be playing at the Riverside.

“It’s been hard but sometimes that’s just how football goes,” he said.

“I got a really bad injury at Boro and if it wasn’t for that then I think I could possibly still be there today.

“It’s just how football goes. For me, moving round clubs isn’t because I’ve always needed to move, but I needed to mentally get over the injury.”
