WIVENHOE were convincing winners when the top two teams in Division One of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship clashed at Rectory Road on Saturday.

Nathan Rabnott was the key man with a fine innings of 131 as Wivenhoe posted a challenging total of 269 for six. Visitors Mildenhall were never really in the chase and they were finally bowled out for 189.

Mildenhall were without their Essex teenage pace bowler Tymal Mills, who was suffering from a thigh strain, but were able to call on the services of another member of the Essex squad and former Mildenhall Youth academy member Tom Westley.

Lennox Lwana removed opening batsman Matt Durrell for a duck and another Essex man, Billy Godleman, was back in the pavilion for 25. Mildenhall were denied a further success when their confident appeal for a catch behind off Rabnott was turned down by the umpire.

The Australian took full advantage and carved the Mildenhall bowling around before finally being fifth man out with the total on 245, having received useful support from Will Morgan (43) and Tom Allison (35).

Mildenhall were hoping for a big contribution from Westley but he was bowled by Rabnott, and his opening partner Joe Reed also fell cheaply to Tom Durrell.

Mildenhall failed to build any momentum into their run chase as the innings slipped to 42 for four with two wickets each for Rabnott and Durrell.

James Holmes scored 43 before becoming one of four victims of Harry Burnett, and Richard Cross was left to marshal the tail with 44 not out to take the final total up to 189 and four batting bonus points.

Maximum points saw Wivenhoe replace their victims at the top of the table.

Frinton were also in good form as they moved to within two points of Mildenhall after an impressive win at Ipswich.

Michael Armstrong carried his bat for 113, having put on 124 for the first wicket with Trevor Moulton (66) and a further 51 before Mark Jones was second out for 30.

Ian Morton’s 42 pushed the final Frinton total up to 267 for five, and although Joe Rusby matched Armstrong’s efforts with an unbeaten 100, the home side were only ever really going for maximum batting points, which they achieved.

Andy Northcote’s 115 ensured a decent total of 247 for Woolpit, and then Will Parker destroyed the Mistley top order on his way to six for 40 as the home side were dismissed for 120. Kyran Young fought a lone battle with 69 for Mistley.

Haverhill eked out a one-wicket win at home to Exning as last pair Dan Pass (10 not out) and James Smith (six not out) took them past the visitors’ 167. Earlier Adam Dellar (49) and Dan Poole (44) had kept Haverhill on course.

The bottom two teams were both looking for their first win, and Luke Fleming’s 51 was the top score as Maldon produced a solid batting display to score 250 for nine on their way to an 85-run win over Abberton.

In Division Two Lakenheath bowled Brightlingsea out for 142 (Greg Palmer six for 32) on their way to a four-wicket win while Elmstead Grasshoppers slipped up for the second week running at Witham.

Hadleigh came badly unstuck at Easton, where Tom Bosher grabbed six for 47 to send the visitors packing for 129. Alan Barker (59 not out) and Spencer Chorlton (55 not out) then knocked off the runs without being parted.

Eleswhere, there were a trio of remarkably close finishes in this week’s matches.

Haverhill’s last pair scraped together the runs needed to beat Exning by one wicket in Division One, and it was a similar story as Witham III upset Division Eight leaders St Osyth by one wicket.

Needham Market have been involved in several close finishes in their first season in the Two Counties, and there was another one in the Division Four match at Hadleigh. They dismissed the home team for 134 but were then bowled out in turn for 133, with Dave Hinsley taking the final wicket to end with five for 17.

Gerry Dunstan turned out for Wivenhoe II and made the highest individual score of the weekend with 143 against St Margarets. He helped the visitors to 302 for six and St Margarets ended just 11 runs short after 92 from Rob White.

Nathan Philpot claimed seven for 64 as East Bergholt beat Brockley in the clash of the bottom two of Division Two, but Jim Fincham improved on that with seven for 44 as Nacton beat Copford II in Division Six.

The biggest win of the weekend came in Division C on Sunday when Frinton sent Wivenhoe packing for 38 to win by 272 runs.

Frinton II had posted the highest team total in Division Five on Saturday, 328 for four against Bury St Edmunds III.

Easton also had a big win, dismissed Hadleigh for 129 in Division Two and winning by 10 wickets.
