NEWCASTLE boss Graeme Souness' ill-fated reign ended today as chairman Freddy Shepherd finally decided to cut his losses and opt for change.

After 16 turbulent months at the St James' Park helm, the 52-year-old Scot headed for the exit door as Shepherd axed the fourth manager of his tenure and prepared to start again.

The pressure had been on Souness for much of his time on Tyneside, with his team failing to live up to expectations despite the investment of a further £50million, culminating in a 3-0 defeat at Manchester City last night.

Predecessor Sir Bobby Robson, the former Ipswich Town manager, lost his job a few months after guiding his side into fifth place in the Barclays Premiership and to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.
