Glorious Empire won yesterday’s feature race at Newmarket in rare glorious sunshine between the heavy showers.

A winner at the course in July, Ed Walker’s three-year-old was 5/6 favourite and got the better of three rivals to land the £10,000 prize.

Jockey George Baker settled the gelding at the rear of the quartet while Captain Bob and Crowdmania set a respectable pace.

The two in front tried to quicken approaching the dip two furlongs out but Baker had the move covered and he pulled Glorious Empire through to win by a length in his favoured soft ground.

Crowdmania was second but Glorious Empire looked real value for the win.

“At Ascot last time he got worked up. But back in trip to seven furlongs today, George got him well switched off and that’s the key to him really,” said the victorious trainer who added there were no immediate plans for the winner.

Well-backed favourite Lunar Moon delivered in the opener for Ryan Moore and trainer Jeremy Noseda.

The 9/4 shot, who cost 105,000 guineas as a yearling, led from the stalls in the maiden fillies stakes and held on well from another newcomer, Cockney Island, and outsider Maybe Now Baby.

Andrew Mullen grabbed his 25th winner of the season when he produced a determined ride to get Donny Rover home in the 10-furlong handicap.

The three-year-old gelding trained by Michael Appleby, was always up with the leaders and Mullen pushed him out to hold on from favourite Raven Ridge who never looked like catching the winner.

There was a surprise in the seven-furlong handicap when seven-year-old gelding Kakatosi recorded his sixth career victory in his 40th race.

Under Shane Kelly for trainer Mike Murphy, Kakatosi used the far rail to help in the closing stages to get his sheepskin nosebanded head in front at 14/1.

Kakatosi clearly enjoyed the soft conditions and won from Oblitereight in a race in which favourite Piceno was disappointing.

Favourite backers were in business in the maiden in which 4/7 chance Long Cross easily defeated eight rivals.

The three-year-old Cape Cross colt won as he pleased under William Buick who merely had to ask him to go and see off Soviet Courage, those two having drawn well clear.

Hayley Turner produced a minor shock when she surged home on the Nigel Tinkler trained Green Zone in the mile handicap.

Sent off at 10/1 in a six-runner field, Turner was at her best in keeping Green Zone up to his work to fend off Zain Empire in a thriller.

Secret Missile emulated one in the finale, bursting out of the stalls in front and never seeing another rival over the minimum five furlongs under Dougie Costello for trainer William Muir, returned at 13/2.

Outsider Touch The Clouds under Paddy Aspell ran on for second.
