The Sweet Solera Stakes, worth more than £28,000 to the winner is the highlight of the seven-race card at Newmarket this afternoon.

The race is a Group 3 for two-year-old fillies and has attracted a classy field of 12.

Off at 3.35pm and live on Channel 4, Alonsoa is the market leader for Fergus Sweeney and trainer Henry Candy. The filly has already won impressively at Sandown and Newbury since June.

Arabian Queen, under Liam Keniry for David Elsworth, won the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes after finishing sixth in the 21-runner Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot while The Queen’s Pack Together, under Pat Dobbs for Richard Hannon, was second to Alonsoa at Sandown.

Godolphin can never be ignored in such events and Efflorescence, Adam Kirby riding for Charlie Appleby and Winters Moon, Silvestre de Sousa for Saeed bin Suroor are the stable’s representatives, Efflorescence having won over course and distance in July and Winters Moon a winner on debut at the track.

Racing starts at 2pm when 14 debutants go in the maiden. Among the favourites are Marsh Hawk, Dobbs for Hannon, Fadhayyil, Dane O’Neill for Barry Hills and Amazing Speed, James Doyle for bin Suroor.

Trainer Luca Cumani’s Ajmany was runner-up at Newmarket recently and bids to go one better in the 2.30pm handicap under Doyle.

Main rivals are Nicholas-copernicus, O’Neill for Ed Walker and Enobled, Shane Kelly for Sir Michael Stoute.

The 3.05pm handicap could go Almargo’s way, the Mark Johnston trained colt third at Goodwood last time. Rene Mathis, third in the Skybet Dash at York is the danger.

Pennine Panther is favourite for the four-runner 4.10pm maiden while John Gosden’s Maverick Wave will take all the beating in the five-runner handicap at 4.45pm.

Seven go in the 5.45pm finale for which Late Shipment, a winner a fortnight ago, is well fancied for a repeat.
