Suffolk-born javelin thrower Goldie Sayers, has announced her retirement from the sport at the age of 34.

The 11-time British champion and three-time Olympian is calling time on her career, although a chapter has yet to close – that being the possible retrospective award of a bronze medal from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Sayers, from Bewmarket, came fourth in China, but then discovered that Mariya Abakumova, the Russian who had finished second and who Sayers had always suspected of cheating, had failed a doping retest for a banned steroid.

However, Abakumova appealed and the process is still ongoing, leaving Sayers in limbo.

Sayers will stay involved in athletics however, as Team GB’s Deputy Chef de Mission for the Gyor 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival.

More to follow.
