Newton Green’s lethal pairing of Mark Duthie and Simon Bearman slaughtered their morning and afternoon opponents by 13 holes to set up victory over Gorleston.

It put Newton into the semi-finals of the Suffolk Hambro Cup, the inter club handicap championship they have not won in half a century. They play Waldringfield in the semis on August 17.

The overall victory margin was 10 holes for the home team.

The early matches were tight, with two halved, and Max Hemson and Ryan Talbot one up. However, Duthie (handicap 2) and Bearman (5) put the icing on the cake by finishing five up against Darren Hellary and Danny Perring.

One of the halved matches included a fight back from four down by Russell Oakey and Lee Hebditch, the latter a former Newton junior who has recently returned to the club from Stoke-by-Nayland.

The Oakey and Hebditch partnership kept Newton in front as they won their afternoon outing by two holes, but with a five-hole defeat inflicted in the second match involving Hemson and Talbot, it was comforting that the Duthie-Bearman duo were again calling the shots in the third match.

The pairing has been a banker in recent seasons, and their eight hole win ensured Newton kept Gorleston’s hopes at bay.
