It’s a long time since I’ve been so delighted by an Ipswich Town result.

Of course, the scoreline against Reading was very pleasing, but the context was even more important.

We are in the middle of a healing process after the damaging and divisive final months of the McCarthy era.

And nothing helps to restore a feeling of togetherness more than a winning team.

In his quiet way, Bryan Klug is doing a terrific job, not just on the pitch but also in bringing the whole club together – players, management and fans in harmony once again.

No-one knows Ipswich Town better than Klug.

He understands the supporters and we, in turn, warm to his passion for our club. He is building a superb platform for whoever the next permanent manager is.

I really hope Marcus Evans is taking note of what is happening at the moment.

We Ipswich fans aren’t overly demanding.

We don’t believe we have a divine right to success.

But we do want to feel valued. That certainly wasn’t the case towards the end with McCarthy.

So, a key attribute of the new manager has to be a close relationship with the supporters.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be someone with an Ipswich Town history, but what is important is an ability and willingness to build good relationships with the fans.

It’s every bit as vital as all the other attributes.

According to the owner, we still have a month or so to wait before we know the identity of the new man.

Does that mean Evans has already identified someone?

I’m increasingly convinced that we’ll have an experienced director of football working alongside a young first-team coach.

It looks like Steven Gerrard is out of the running, so how about Frank Lampard?

In the meantime, we have the final game of the season to look forward to.

I really hope we have a big crowd next Sunday, and create a brilliant atmosphere.

It is the 40th anniversary of our FA Cup Final victory, after all!

It will be an opportunity to reminisce, to continue the current healing process - and to look forward with optimism.
