HE’S the only Ipswich Witch left in the Foxhall 1-7 from the opening Premier League team that took to the track in 2010.

But Morten Risager reckons the 2013 side could be the best team yet put together at Foxhall Stadium.

Ipswich take to the track in March for their third year in the Premier League with Risager quietly confident of success.

“We may not look as strong on paper as we have done in recent seasons, but I don’t think there are as many ‘maybes’ in our team this season,” the Danish star said.

“Ben Barker will be a solid No.1 and our bottom level is much higher than it has been in the last two seasons.

“I don’t expect many people to think we will win the league, but I like the team that has been put together.”

Risager’s two campaigns with the Witches since his move to Suffolk in 2010 have both been ruined by injury. Last season, on opening night, he crashed out and was sidelined for months with a back injury. Yet he never had any doubt he would be back in the side this year.

“I felt I rode my way back into the team really,” Risager added.

“Some people said my drop down to reserve helped me a lot, but I was already scoring well before I dropped down.

“After that my form just got better.”

This year, Risager is the third highest-averaged rider in the ‘Sackers’ Witches side behind Barker and Leigh Lanham. And while he is happy to start the season as a heat leader, he also hopes last season’s pairing with Lanham could see that partnership retained.

“I enjoyed riding with Leigh and we trust each other on the track,” Risager said.

“Of course I’d love to be a heat leader too, but that is up to the management when they put the pairings together.”

Having just returned from a holiday in Australia, Risager rode in one meeting and caught up with Witches team-mates Cameron Heeps and Rohan Tungate.

And he had good news for Witches fans on Heeps’ form.

“Cam (Cameron) is still getting over his injury, but is getting stronger all the time and looking very fast,” Risager added.

“By the time he arrives back in England he will be back to his old self and that will be good news for the team.”
