In our daily feature, we take a look at what happened on this day in Ipswich Town’s history...and today’s games include a win in Europe and a clash with Manchester United.
We start today 40 years ago when Town beat Austrian side SW Innsbruck 1-0 at Portman Road in the Cup Winners Cup second round, while in 2001 the Blues were held to a goalless draw at home with Swedish side Helsingborgs IF in the UEFA Cup.
In 2016, Town beat Burton Albion 2-0 at Portman Road with Freddie Sears being among the scorers to end his 38 games without a goal, while in 1986, Nigel Gleghorn scored a hat-trick as the Blues won 4-3 at Bradford City.
Keith Andrews was the only scorer as the Blues beat Portsmouth 1-0 at Portman Road in 2011 to make it six games unbeaten in the 2011-12 season, while in 2008 Pablo Counago scored twice as the Blues drew 2-2 with Swansea City at home.
It was on this day in 1980, Paul Marnier scored as the Blues drew 1-1 with Man United at Portman Road to remain unbeaten at home in the 1980-81 season, while David McGoldrick scored in Town’s 1-1 drew 1-1 Blackburn who scored a 90th minute eqauliser.
And finally on this day 15 years ago, Matt Richards scored as the Blues beat Stoke City 1-0 at Portman Road on TV for their seventh league win in eight outings in the 2002-03 season, while in 2005 the Blues drew 2-2 with Coventry City at Portman Road.
