Ipswich-based Paul Bugg says his managerial career is all but over after he quit Thurlow Nunn Division One side, Diss Town, after just 42 days in charge.

The former Whitton United boss was appointed in May, having spent time on the Long Melford coaching staff last season, but resigned on Wednesday night.

Bugg cited a number of players leaving Diss to move elsewhere, and a disagreement in the direction the club was moving as the reasons for his departure.

The exit of former manager Ross Potter to Wroxham saw a number of players follow him out of the door, whilst other members of the squad have also sought pastures new, including last season’s top scorer Shaun Hunsdon, who has joined Debenham, and striker Adam Burroughs, who left for Harleston.

Bugg claims he was set to bring in nine Ipswich-based players to Brewers Green Lane, but those moves fell through.

“I am done with football, unless there is something that I can’t turn down,” said Bugg yesterday.

“I’m 45 and don’t need it. I am giving the club five weeks to appoint a new manager and rebuild a squad to achieve the targets.”

Diss chairman, Richard Upson, who explained he increased Bugg’s transfer budget slightly after a meeting earlier in the week, said: “Paul came to the club after our last manager left, a move that was disappointing given our plans were already in place for the new season.

“Given the fact that the team had been put together 100 per cent by Ross, some players inevitably left, but that happens in football.

“I said to Paul I felt we would end up with about six players from last season and he would recruit at least 10 new players, which wasn’t a problem.

“I know he worked hard to try and do that but there are other clubs in the area with bigger budgets and that hasn’t helped.

“We set our budget reasonably to work within the league we’re in at the time, we don’t steer away from that, and we rely on the management team at the time to bring players in on that budget.”

Upson added: “Our football club has been through a bit of trauma and the previous manager leaving set us back a couple of years.

“We’ve lost another manager and we have just got to roll our sleeves up and get on with it.”
