Colchester United completed a quickfire double swoop in the transfer market by also snapping up midfielder David Perkins from Rochdale.

Having already smashed the club record transfer fee to buy striker Steve Gillespie from Cheltenham, the U's then secured the services of tough-tackling Perkins for an undisclosed six-figure fee.

Central midfielder Perkins, 26, made almost 200 appearances for his first club Morecambe. He moved to Rochdale in January of last year and helped the Spotland club to reach the League Two play-off final in May, although he was suspended for the final due to a red card in the semi-finals against Darlington.
