SUFFOLK Over-50s are set to be boosted by the presence of Phil Caley in their ranks this season.

Former Suffolk all-rounder Caley, who celebrated his 50th birthday last October, has confirmed he will make himself available for selection this season.

Despite being one of the smaller counties in the competition, Suffolk have reached the national quarter-finals in each of the last two seasons.

Caley said: “At the moment it looks as though my availability is going to be pretty good.

“I am hoping to go to at least one of the pre-season net sessions and hopefully prove that I can do a job for them this season, if selected.”

Tony Stubbs, who will again skipper the Over-50s in the coming season, said: “It will be fantastic to have a player of Phil’s quality and ability available to us. It will be a pleasure to be on the same side as him, after playing against him for many years for Frinton against the Old Ipswichians!”

“We can take heart from reaching the quarter-finals in the past two years, and hopefully we can progress further this year.”

Rick Jones remains manager and Stubbs’ vice-captain will be Kevin Dobson.

As well as Caley, Brockley’s Dean Sykes and Graham Underwood, formerly with Stowmarket and now Copdock & Old Ipswichians, both qualify for the Over-50s this season.

Dick Bond will skipper the Over-60s 1st XI with Clive Witherly as his vice-captain. The 2nd XI captain is Graham Penny, who will have Ray Black as his vice-captain.

Chris Watson was appointed as Over-60s manager for this season at the Suffolk Seniors AGM.
