THE controversial sending off of Clive Platt marred Colchester's match against Premiership side Bolton at Layer Road on Saturday that also saw Teddy Sheringham make his long-awaited U's debut in a 2-12 defeat.

A stunned Platt was shown a straight red card for an alleged elbow in the 28th minute as he challenged the visitors Michalik, leaving the U's to play two-thirds of the game with only 10 men.

Kevin Lisbie, who signed for the U's on Friday, fired them ahead after just six minutes, before Bolton equalised three minutes later from a Gary Speed penalty after Mark Yeates was adjudged to have fouled Vaz Te.

Bolton then took the lead after 11 minutes with a quality goal from Vaz Te at the end of a flowing move.
