Four of the nation’s most prolific winning Point-To-Pointers could clash in the Ladies Open Race at the Waveney Harriers meeting at Higham, between Colchester and Ipswich, tomorrow, writes James Crispe.

A total of 65 entries have been attracted to this seven race fixture, which gets under way at 1pm with a nine-entry Veteran and Novice Riders Race and runs through until 3.55pm when a Restricted Race with seven possible combatants will come under starters orders.

The steeplechasing action will be preceded at noon by two children’s pony races, around half a circuit of the course but bypassing the fences.

The ten Ladies Open entries includes a quartet of horses – Bound For Glory, Karinga Dancer, Start Royal and Top Smart – who between them have been successful an incredible 39 times in races between the flags.

The majority of that total – 25 victories to be precise – are down to Start Royal, but this admirable gelding, who has won six times at this venue including way back in 2009, may just be beginning to lose some of his speed at the age of 14.

His three principal rivals are all two years younger than him and each can boast a perfect Higham record – Top Smart has won on both his visits while Bound For Glory and Karinga Dancer have triumphed on their solitary outings at this flat, speed-favouring course.

The Mens Open has nine entries and is set to be dominated by Broken Eagle provided recent rain does not preclude the participation of this fast-ground lover. He made it 13 wins from 16 Pointing starts when clocking a rapid time here last month – his sixth victory from as many Higham outings.

Midnight Cowboy, a decent performer under rules for Alan King, should be up to making a winning start in this discipline in the Veteran & Novice Riders Race and could spark a double for jockey Tim Gredley who also has Just Cause among the 18 engaged in the following contest, the PPORA Club Members.

Just Cause should find this course more to his liking than the stamina-sapping Horseheath three weeks ago and, on his sixth start of the season, should have a fitness advantage over the reappearing Changeofluck.

The long-absent Vinnie The Pooh could provide the answer to the 12-entry Maiden Race while Mountain Eagle, who ran well when second to the useful Steeles Terrace at the last fixture here, could go one better in the Restricted.

Higham is just to the west of the A12 between Colchester and Ipswich using the B1068 turn-off towards Stoke-by-Nayland, post code CO7 6NG. Admission will be charged at £12 per head with under 17s allowed in for free.
