INTER Milan coach Jose Mourinho is being investigated by Greater Manchester Police after an allegation of common assault was made against him following last night's Champions League tie at Old Trafford.

It has been alleged that the former Chelsea manager punched a supporter close to his team's bus following the Serie A side's 2-0 defeat at the hands of the English and European champions.

Police have requested CCTV footage of the area from United and have confirmed a complaint has been made.

"Shortly before midnight last night a man reported that he had been punched in the face outside Old Trafford," a police statement read. "We are investigating an allegation of common assault.'

Mourinho has been named among the favourites to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager of United, when the long-serving Red Devils' coach finally decided to retire.
