MILDENHALL Fen Tigers begin the defence of the National Trophy this weekend when they take on Stoke Potters at West Row on Sunday (4.30pm).

They’ll be without Josh Bates who is riding for Scunthorpe at Newcastle, but otherwise the team will be unchanged from the side that were beaten by Dudley Heathens in the National Shield last weekend.

“We’ll be operating rider replacement for Josh, which isn’t ideal, but I am sure the boys who take his rides will get well among the points,” said Mildenhall co-promoter Chris Louis.

“On the plus side it’s great experience for him, as riding at a higher level will not only benefit him, but us as well. Having looked at our fixtures there are very few that clash with Scunthorpe, so I don’t see him doubling up as a problem for us at all.”

Reflecting on the defeat against the Heathens, Louis said, “Taking nothing away from Dudley who won fair and square and look a solid outfit, I wasn’t overly surprised by the result, as so few of the boys had any decent track time. They will all be working hard over the next few weeks getting set-ups sorted and plenty of laps in. Everyone just needs to be patient and let the team settle down.”

Stoke, who have featured in many memorable battles with Mildenhall over the last couple of years, will be at full strength led by former Fen Tiger Lee Smart, well backed up by other West Row experts Luke Priest, Kyle Hughes and Luke Chessell. Add Ben Reade into the mix and Louis knows Sunday’s clash is far from a foregone conclusion.

“If all of their team clicks we will need to be back to our best to see them off,” Louis concluded. “But make no mistake, confidence in the camp is high and the boys are determined to get the opening ‘W’ of the season on the board and take the first steps to keeping the West Row Trophy cabinet full for another year!”
