Layer Road remains a garrison, thanks to first-half strikes from the U's on-fire duo. Both have now netted 13 goals for the season.
Cureton broke the deadlock after only four minutes, with a sweet free-kick that flew through the defensive wall and past keeper Matt Murray.
But his strike-force partner Iwelumo was not to be outdone, scoring his 13th of the season in the last minute of the first-half. The Scotsman did seem to control Dean Gerken's clearance with his hand, but he still had much to do. Iwelumo fended off the challenge of Gary Breen to blast a shot between Murray's legs.
Wolves did pull a goal back in the dying seconds of the game. Defender Neill Collins bundled home from a free-kick, but it was too little too late for the Midlanders.
Colchester are therefore going great guns. They are back in the play-off zone, and Cureton and Iwelumo will be looking to add to their combined tally of 26 goals at QPR on New Year's Day.
