The 28-year-old has travelled to the midlands for a medical and to discuss personal terms with Derby chairman Adam Pearson.
The Rams, relegated last season after an abysmal Premier League campaign, have already bolstered their front line with Watford striker Nathan Ellington and Stockport's Liam Dickinson, but are set to miss out on target Marlon King.
It is thought that the Wigan hitman has chosen to join another Premier League team.
