Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has vowed to stick with the kids for a trip to Manchester United in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

David McGoldrick, James Alabi and Ryan Fraser all scored in extra-time to seal a 4-1 victory at League One side Doncaster Rovers tonight, Town then being drawn at Old Trafford.

Just like in the 2-1 win over League Two side Stevenage in the first round, McCarthy gave his youngsters and fringe players their chance to shine. And, speaking before the draw, he vowed that would be the case again.

“Absolutely,” he replied, when asked if he would stick with a similar selection in the next round, regardless of who his side were drawn against.

“Whoever we play it will be all the young’ uns again. Hopefully Kevin Bru and (Teddy) Bish will be back and we can make it even stronger again.”

Then, speaking to the club website after the draw was made, he said: “Man United away – piece of cake! I’ve just answered a question in the press conference ‘will I stick with the kids?’ I said ‘yes’, but I’m not so sure now. We might need a few more of the senior ones.

“It’s a fabulous tie. I’m delighted. I look forward to that and so will our fans. We had 700 tonight and there will be a lot more at Old Trafford, that’s for sure.”

On tonight’s win, he said: “I was going to say it’s the last thing I wanted, extra-time, but the last thing I wanted was to lose and go out. I think we deserved it.”

There was one comical moment when all-action French-born winger Larsen Toure – desperate to impress McCarthy and fans alike – threw his shirt into the away end at full-time only to have to retrieve it for extra-time.

“He needs help!” joked McCarthy. “We’ll have to get him some treatment or something. I think some of the fans were telling him actually. As much as they wanted his shirt, I think they realised he needed it for another 30 minutes.

“Look, it is what it is – it’s funny now. He was great. I think he’ll be a good player for us.”

He added: “I thought Adam McDonnell was excellent on his debut against two good players. James Alabi is a handful. He’s as raw as anything, but he’s got something and scoring on his debut will help him no end.”
