THE Ridgeons League First Division has suffered a blow following the withdrawal of Saffron Walden ahead of the new season.

Saffron Walden, founded in 1872, are the oldest club in Essex and the 23rd oldest in the world.

The club have informed the league that due to their financial situation they cannot guarantee to complete the season, and so have decided to withdraw now rather than possibly disrupt the league by having to resign during the course of the season.

The club hope to consolidate their financial position over the coming months with a view to rejoining the Ridgeons League for the 2012/13 season.

Saffron Walden were due to open their campaign with a visit from Stowmarket Town. Their withdrawal reduces the number of sides in Division One to 16 this season, meaning clubs will play just 30 league fixtures.
