Bury Town manager Ben Chenery is still looking to add to his Blues squad, which he insists is very much a work in progress.

Chenery makes his managerial debut in charge of the Blues at Hendon today, following an eventful pre-season at the Ryman League Premier Division club.

Long-serving boss Richard Wilkins quit at the end of the season and has since joined divisional rivals Leiston as manager Steve Ball’s assistant.

This summer has seen Chenery re-build ahead of the new season but he is still looking for fresh blood and is attempting to bring Hungarian striker and former Ipswich Town triallist Julian Bartos, 17, to the club.

“It’s coming together and we have done some good work this summer, but we are still looking to improve if possible,” said Chenery, who, among other summer signings, has landed Spanish youngster Roger Mari, who will be studying English at West Suffolk College this year.

“I am pleased how we are moving the ball and how we look comfortable on it, and there have been some encouraging results, but I am wise enough to know that you can’t look too much into pre-season.

“I have been in teams that have had good pre-season results and then started the campaign poor and vice-versa.

“It’s an on-going project and when the season starts we will be nowhere near where I want us to be but it takes time when you make changes and introduce a new philosophy.”

Meanwhile, Chenery believes it will be business as normal in terms of his relationship with Wilkins – the pair both work at West Suffolk College with Wilkins the head of football and Chenery a lecturer in sports science as well as being an academy coach at the campus.

“We have had discussions and we are both sensible and professional people,” added Chenery.

“There will be times when we will want to keep things close to our chest with both Bury and Leiston being in the same division, but it should be good fun too and I imagine there will be plenty of banter between us, especially prior to the game on Boxing Day between the teams.

“There is certainly no problem with us working together.”

Jack Brame (fractured cheekbone) and Will Brown (ankle ligaments) will miss out along with new signing Remi Garrett (unavailable until August 18) and Billy Clarke (knee).

Russell Short has returned as player/assistant manager, together with Conner Hall and Marcus Garnham.

Liam Wales has also had a great pre-season, showing more of his ability and that he is ready for the long season ahead.

With a new manager and a restructured squad, the Bury fans will be unsure what to expect this season but the Blues have some of the most passionate fans in the Ryman League and will no doubt be behind the new management and the team all season.

Hendon finished eighth in the league last season with 70 points but had a poor finish to their season, losing four of their last five games.

Hendon took all the points last season against Bury and boss Gary McCann has strengthened his squad over the summer.
