Needham Market 1 Colchester United 4

Sammie Szmodics netted a second-half hat-trick, and Sam Walker enjoyed 45 minutes of action on his return from long-term injury, as Colchester United enjoyed a productive second pre-season friendly of the summer at Needham Market tonight.

After a goalless first-half, the U’s went goal-mad during the first 20 minutes of the second period at a damp Bloomfields.

Szmodics chalked up goals in the 49th and 63rd minutes, with Chris Porter also dispatching a 64th minute penalty, before Szmodics completed his hat-trick with another cracking finish on 75 minutes.

The Marketmen responded late on, chalking up a deserved consolation goal by Emmanuel Osei.
