BLUES defender Georges Santos is poised to join Championship rivals QPR after his agent Mick Mills held talks with the London club last night, writes Derek Davis.

Ipswich Town have made it clear to the Frenchman they are ready to let him go on a free transfer after allowing a number of clubs permission to speak to him.

Santos was given the nod to hold talks with Burnley last week but has not met with new Clarets' boss Steve Cotterill, who yesterday signed Micah Hyde from Watford.

The former Tranmere Rovers, Sheffield United and Grimsby Town man has also been linked with Stoke City, who flew out to Austria yesterday for their pre-season tour.

Most of Stoke's transfers are dealt with by director of football John Rudge, who is still in England but it is unlikely that Santos would want to move to the Potteries.

Santos trained with Ipswich yesterday and is included in the provisional squad travelling to Oxford United at lunchtime today for tonight's friendly at the Kassam Stadium.

QPR were promoted automatically last season and manager Ian Holloway has been allowed to add to his squad.

He is close to securing Derby County keeper Lee Camp in a £500,000 deal and he has been told he has more money to spend to strengthen, while Ipswich continue to trim the wage bill and search for free transfers.

n Alun Armstrong is training with Bristol City this week and is due to play in a friendly for them against Kidderminster Harriers tomorrow.

Armstrong was released by Town and trained with them earlier this month but with no chance of a new contract at Portman Road he is now trying his luck with the League One outfit.

Meanwhile, Chris Makin plays once again for Leicester City tonight when they travel to MK Dons for a pre-season game. Free agent Makin played in the defeat at Barnsley on Saturday and was with the Foxes in Finland last week but has yet to be offered anything more concrete. Released Derby defender Youl Mawene has not been retained by Mickey Adams after a two-game trial and is now trying his luck with Wolves.
