Elena Baltacha exited the Mercury Insurance Open in Round Two yesterday, going down 6-0 7-6 (7-4) against Agnieszka Radwanska.

Ipswich-born Baltacha had progressed to the second stage of the competition after comfortably defeating Melanie Oudin in the first round but she was powerless against world number 13 Radwanska.

Britain’s number one female tennis player, now ranked 60th in the world, put up little opposition in the first set but posed more of a threat in the second - breaking Radwanksa before eventually losing in a tie-break.

Baltacha’s match was the only second-round match to be completed in California on Tuesday.

Nino Severino, the coach of the 27-year-old, posted his support on Twitter: “Bally keeps learning, world class tennis is a tough business, Bally played world class tennis against a world class player in the second.”
