Fynn Valley knocked holders Bury St Edmunds out of the Hambro Cup by seven holes at Witnesham.

Now they meet Stowmarket on a neutral venue on August 26.

Fynn Valley were only one ahead at lunch after Bury’s fourth pair, Ben Coleman and Roger Nicholson, came in five up.

Fynn Valley won three of the four afternoon matches to clinch a notable success.

Stowmarket dominated play in the afternoon against Woodbridge. Team captain Henry Cutting played for the first time this season and his partnership with Ross Harvey ended seven holes ahead on the day.

Halesworth made home advantage count against Thorpeness whose consolation was a seven-hole afternoon win for George Austin and Tony Mardon.

All four ties ended in home wins. Aldeburgh scored a convincing victory over The Suffolk after taking control in the morning.

It was a tense finish at Fynn Valley where their last pair, Wayne Clarke and Gary Hignett, needed to halve the final hole of the match to avoid a play-off.

Quarter-finals: Rushmere beat Stowmarket by 12 holes, Haverhill beat St Clements by 19 holes, Ipswich beat Seckford by nine holes, Fynn Valley beat Rookery Park by two holes.

Semi-finals on neutral venues to be played on August 26. Haverhill v Rushmere; Fynn Valley v Ipswich.

Meanwhile, Suffolk Seniors finished a disappointing third place out of four in the Southern Counties foursomes qualifier at Sheringham.

Suffolk have often done well in this competition in the past and were hopeful of reaching the final at Ealing in September.

This year it will be Norfolk representing the region.

Suffolk won three and lost two matches in the morning but faded in the afternoon. Mark Jackson and Nigel Fosker salvaged a half when all the other Suffolk pairs lost.
