Silver Barrel joy for Ipswich golfer at Purdis Heath
Mark Lewis of Ipswich won the Silver Barrel at Purdis Heath. Playing off a handicap of three he had gross scores of 72 and 71 leaving him with a net score of 137 to take the handicap trophy. He will now play off two.
The lowest gross score came from Sam Byford with 68 and 72.
He was hoping to be involved on the second day of the Suffolk match play at Rookery Park. He lost his quarter-final to Marc Duszinski and then took Marc’s place in the Silver Barrel.
Luke Thompson of Rookery Park, who put watching England football ahead of the Suffolk match play, was runner-up with 75 and 68 on count back.
Three others also finished on 143. Lewis was third and the consistent Jed Seeley of Newton Green was fourth with 71 and 72.
The lowest round came from Adam Sheldrake of Felixstowe Ferry.
His 67 gave him a lunch-time lead but 76 in the afternoon dropped him to fifth.
Habebul Islam (70 74) was sixth on 144, four shots clear of seventh placed Paul Waring of Felixstowe Ferry.
The morning net prize went to Islam and the afternoon winner was Russell Rayner.

n Chris Fleming comes into Suffolk’s six-man team for the South East Group county qualifier at Orsett on Saturday.
He takes the place of Monty Scowsill who is still battling against glandular fever.
The Suffolk six are Jack Cardy, Sam Debenham (both Hintlesham), Paul Waring (Felixstowe Ferry), James Biggs (Diss), Gregor Tait (Aldeburgh) and Chris Fleming (Ipswich).
Suffolk still have a chance of winning the Anglian League this year after victories over Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.
Leicestershire, whom Suffolk meet in their final fixture of the season at Stowmarket, have maximum points from three matches.
Northamptonshire and Suffolk both have four points.
Suffolk meet Northants at Wellingborough on August 5. The ball is in Suffolk’s court.
n Suffolk champion James Biggs of Diss leads the county’s challenge in the Tillman Trophy at Moor Park between July 17 and 19.
Other Suffolk players in the field are Paul Waring, Habebul Islam, Sam Byford, Jed Seeley and Calvin Sherwood. Alfie Halil is among the reserves.
Essex hopefuls include Callum Pipe of Braintree and Alasdair Plumb of Chelmsford.
n Nick Day of Henbury won the Logan Trophy, the English Open Mid-Amateur Championship, by five shots at Long Ashton.
Gary Fisher of Chelmsford was 22nd (80 72 72), Danny Western (Gorleston) was tied 31st (77 77 74) and Alan Sharrocks (Colchester) was tied 33rd (73 79 77).
Jon Baker-Odlin (Barnham Broom) missed the cut.
n There is no local interest in the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie between July 19 and 22.
Sam Forgan, Jamie Abbott, Hugo Dobson and Jamie Moul all played in the final qualifiers last week. Only three players from each of the four venues qualified including Retief Goosen from South Africa.
There was no joy for the quartet of former Suffolk county players.
