FORMER Yorkshire player Simon Guy will make his debut for Suffolk as they open their Minor Counties Trophy campaign this weekend.

Guy is included in the Suffolk side to face Lincolnshire at Copdock on Sunday, start 11am, in the first of Suffolk’s four group games this season.

The 33-year-old wicket-keeper/batsman replaces ex-Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire batsman John Sadler, who turned out for Suffolk in last season’s one-day competition.

Guy, who made his first-class debut in 2000, played 37 matches for Yorkshire. He last appeared in July 2007 and was released two years later.

Suffolk skipper Justin Bishop said: “He will help with the warm-up and play as a batsman.”

Opening bowler Phil Edwards, who returned to play for Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk last season after being released by Kent, has not made himself available this season, so Matt Hunn is set to lead the attack.

The teenager produced some impressive performances after making his Minor Counties Championship debut last summer, and Bishop said: “He did brilliantly last year, but will be playing in the one-dayers for the first time, so it will be a real test for him.”

Another absentee in the one-day side is James Finch, the ex-Yorkshire off spinner, who enjoyed a good season with both bat and ball for Suffolk last summer.

Bishop said: “He lives just 20 minutes away from Newcastle and I think he found it too much to drive down and back on the same day for one-day matches.

“But he loves playing for Suffolk and would not play for another Minor County, so hopefully will be available for the forthcoming Championship matches.”

It is six years since Suffolk last staged a one-day match at Copdock, who have been busy behind-the-scenes promoting the match.

“They have really made an effort to try to get spectators to come along and watch, so hopefully they will get their rewards,” added Bishop.

Fifty boundary-side car parking spaces are available at 5 (7.50 on the day) on a first come, first served basis, while there will be limited spaces for spectators wishing to park on the ground free of charge.
