It may have been the Full Members Cup, but Simon Milton’s strike against Norwich City, is fondly remembered as any goal that has been scored by an Ipswich Town player in an East Anglia Derby.

The Blues head to Carrow Road on Sunday hoping a new hero can write his name in the club’s folklore, Ipswich chasing their first win in Norfolk since February 2006 and their first in a derby against their bitter rivals for almost eight years.

David McGoldrick referred to the adulation Danny Haynes receives from Town fans whenever he returns to Portman Road. Haynes was not prolific during his time at Portman Road, but he did score the winner in that last victory at Carrow Road, and followed that up with a brace at Portman Road, the following November.

Score a goal, and you will be regarded as a legend. Just ask Paul Anderson, who, having never been a mainstay under Mick McCarthy, scored a goal in the play-off semi final, prompting fans to launch an online petition to give him a new contract.

Milton recalls his goal, in a 1-0 win in December 1988, and the adulation that followed: “It was back in the late 1980s, they were in the First Division and we were in the Second. I came on and scored the winner and the place went absolutely crazy,” said Milton.

“It was my first derby and, at the time, I was living in Thetford, right on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, so that welcomed me to the club really well.

“In those days the press was not as it is now, but scoring the goal made me understand just what derbies are about and how much they mean for people in the area.”

It wasn’t all positive for Milton though, who has had his ups and downs in the derby clashes.

“I have played in derbies where it hasn’t always been positive and I gave a penalty away at Portman Road once which I am sure led to their winner,” he added.

“It’s all about taking the rough with the smooth.”

Milton will be at Wembley on Sunday as the guest of honour for Prostate Cancer UK at the EFL Cup final between Manchester United and Southampton.

He has worked tirelessly with a dedicated team at the club, over the last three years, to raise money for the charity.
