Ipswich Town skipper Luke Chambers says the Blues are targeting back-to-back home wins this week after ‘setting the standard’ for performances this season.

Mick McCarthy’s men may have lost 3-2 at Leeds on Saturday, but they produced an impressive display at the Championship table-toppers to boost belief ahead of the visit of newly-relegated Sunderland tomorrow night (7.45pm) and then Bristol City on Saturday.

“That’s the standard we’ve set now,” said Chambers, with Town seventh in the standings after winning five of their opening eight league games.

“I think it’s convinced some of the lads we can give it a right go this year. Now we have to demand that sort of performance from each other every week. Winning these next two home games has to be the aim.”

He continued: “When we’ve got everyone to pick from in this squad we’re going to have a very, very good team. I think we’ll have one of the best squads in the division, definitely.

“It’s that competition for places that we’ve been crying out for over the last couple of years. And it’s forcing people to step up to the plate.

“We’ve never been the most free-scoring team, obviously Murph (Daryl Murphy) had his season, but I think we’ve got goals from all over now.

“I would say it’s up there with the best squads we’ve had in my six years here. I don’t want to curse it, but I think we can be very positive moving forwards.”

Chambers added: “Last season was not good in anyone’s imagination, but we have to try and forget that because we’ve got new players in the building, there is a new buzz and people are enjoying their football.

“We need to push on and prove to ourselves that we are a good enough team to make that top six again. I want the lads to show their ability and what I know they are capable of.”

With Town having played in front of the lowest league crowd at Portman Road in 19 years recently (14,164), the Blues captain said: “It’s about trying to play with a bit more freedom now. We need to come out in these home games, hit the ground running and give absolutely everything because that’s how you get people on side.

“Sunderland have got a long way to travel, they are in the bottom three, so we need to capitalise on their misfortune and turn the screw.”

It wasn’t pretty, but Freddie Sears’ deflected goal was enough to secure Ipswich Town’s first home win since April this afternoon.

Every day in the run-up to Christmas, we’re counting down Ipswich Town’s greatest-ever players, culminating in the Blues’ best featuring on Christmas Day.

In this week’s Ipswich Town nostalgia, we look back to December 21, 2004, when Darren Bent took Ipswich to the top of the Championsip on Christmas Day, after beating Wigan 2-1 thanks to his 89th-minute winner at Portman Road.

Captain Luke Chambers wants his Ipswich Town future sorted sooner rather than later but knows the club’s precarious position means he may have to be patient.
