Stoppage machine Emrah Sonmez has warned foe Dominic Dillon that he needs to ‘step up his game’ if he hopes to have any chance of preventing him from becoming a two-weight champion at BCMMA 20 this weekend.

Sonmez, already the promotion’s lightweight king, steps down to featherweight to tackle Norfolk’s Dillon for the title this Saturday at the Charter Hall in Colchester.

The 25-year-old, who fights out of LDG in East London, is on an absolute tear, having won seven fights in a row since losing his debut pro bout by decision.

‘The Antolian Wolf’ has won his last four by KO – including two by way of vicious knees – and has a further two choke submissions on his record.

In Dillon, he faces a naturally smaller man coming off a KO loss – though he’d won four in a row before that, and boasts some very dangerous BJJ skills on the floor.

But Sonmez (7-1) said: “I don’t really know too much about Dillon. I know he’s a jiu-jitsu guy, but this ain’t jiu-jitsu, it’s MMA, so he needs to step up his game a little bit.

“I’m bigger than him and I’m better with my stand-up and grappling, so it should be good and we’re going there for the win, for the kill.”

Sonmez, who said the drop to featherweight ‘shouldn’t be a problem’, added: “The gameplan is to go in there, keep it standing, wherever it goes – if he wants to take it to the floor I can take it to the floor, if he wants to wrestle, I can wrestle or if he wants a kickboxing fight we can do that too. Wherever it goes, we’re ready.”

He also revealed that he’s already had offers from other promotions, but wants to first become a two-weight champion with BCMMA before stepping up.

“BCMMA is a great show, a great platform for anyone,” he said. “I actually got offers from bigger organisations as well but we didn’t accept it because I wanted to fight for the featherweight belt.”

However, opponent Dillon (4-3) is planning on putting a halt to Sonmez’s meteoric rise up the ranks. The BJJ brown belt said: “I have been working some specific stand-up things for this fight and working on a few little tricks which I don’t want to give away, but I will be fighting a bit of a different fight.”

He added: “I’m comfortable wherever this fight goes. I feel that, at the technical level that I’m at, I can just overcome with my technique.

“I’m not saying he makes massive mistakes or anything, I just have faith and confidence in my skills.”
