Southend III 1 Ipswich East Suffolk IV 2

Ipswich East Suffolk IV overcame an early season of non-availability and injury to beat Southend III.

Just nine players started for IES but, as so often, the adverse odds brought out the best.

Whiting and new find Jones took the game to Southend and in the early minutes won a short corner which Whiting converted efficiently.

Southend, stung by falling behind, threw everything in to restoring a level score but IES resisted valiantly until reinforcements arrived after 25 minutes, taking them to ten.

The second half was an even contest with Southend scoring in circumstances which left the IES defence wondering just how it had happened.

A near immediate response came from a magnificent cross pitch pass from Thornton into the path of Whiting who dodged the keeper to slot home with the sweetest of strikes.

The last ten minutes saw increased pressure from Southend who, staring defeat in the face to ten players, mounted attack after attack.

Wave after wave broke on the shores of an experienced and inspired defensive display.

Hindle was awesome in the centre of defence and took the honours as man of the match with Murray between the posts more than playing his part in an all round near rock solid performance.
