In the Bury & District Bowls League’s annual Guinness Cup competition, held at a sunny Risbygate club, it was a successful day for the Spurling family from Hengrave.
Husband and wife Tony and Val played with daughter Toni Anne and surprisingly, given there were 26 triples from 12 different clubs taking part, their opponents in the final were the Greene King rink skipped by Toni Anne’s husband, Mark Henfield, who was partnered by Gerry Caplin and Bob Boor.
Hengrave lost only three of the 10 ends in the final and ran out comfortable winners by 12 shots to five. Third place went to the Ixworth team of Matthew Smith, Pat Jennings and Ann Lilley who also lost only three ends to beat St Edmundsbury (Robbie Bryant, Robert Lillistone and Mick Giles) 10 shots to six.
Earlier in the day, Greene King and St Edmundsbury were the only teams to win all four section matches.
In the other section, Ixworth and Tuddenham St Mary (Newton Kendall) had three wins going into game four, but both lost and that allowed Hengrave, with three wins and a draw, to contest the final.
George Swindles, president-elect of the Bury & District League, hosted an excellent event and his chosen charity is Motor Neurone Disease Association.
