The Bulgarian winger has seen the club splash 100million on Carlos Tevez, Kolo Toure, Roque Santa Cruz, Emmanuel Adebayor and Gareth Barry this summer.
Petrov said: “I don't see City depending too much on me this year, at least from what I have seen from the pre-season friendlies.
But no player is content with polishing the bench and I'm no exception.”
Petrov, 30, who joined from Atletico Madrid in 2007, will meet boss Mark Hughes next week to thrash out his future. Spurs have shown interest in him.
