The 28-year-old Brazilian - who was signed from Dutch side PSV for around �7.8m this time last year - made 34 appearances for Spurs last season.
His career in England started badly with a series of blunders, including inexplicably letting a shot by Aston Villa's Ashley Young under his body.
However, the Brazilian international - who has nine full caps - improved vastly in the second half of the season and drew plaudits after outstanding performances against West Ham and Manchester United.
