St Joseph’s College in Ipswich have reached the quarter-finals of the RFU National Cup after seeing off Wimbledon College 18-14 in a tense regional final.

The under 15 clash saw some end-to-end rugby, with both sides countering fast-paced attacking with fearsome defending.

Tries from Harry Williams, Gabriel Jones and Joe Pattinson saw St Jo’s up by just a point heading into the final 15 minutes, but a late penalty secured the victory.

St Jo’s will now host Whitgift School in the quarter-finals. Anthony O’Riordan, assistant principal and director of sport at the college, said: “I am very proud of the team and larger squad.

“We make a point of developing resilience through the way we train, ensuring student athletes understand the importance of not getting overcome with the need to score, but rather focusing on the process of how to score and, even more importantly, how to defend with composure.”
