Mildenhall bounced back from their first defeat of the summer, at home to Copdock & Old Ipswichian the previous weekend, by surging to a six-wicket win over Burwell & Exning at Mingay Park in the East Anglian Premier League on Saturday.

Home skipper, Joseph Tetley, plundered an excellent ton in Burwell’s innings of 280 all out, off 58.3 overs, but the Suffolk visitors made short work of reaching their target, to rattle up their fifth win from seven fixtures.

James Stamatis was the principal run-scorer, with a wonderful unbeaten hundred, after opener Joe Reed had blasted a whirlwind 63 and Nickl Maiolo a well-crafted 69.

In the absence of regular captain Ben Shepperson, acting skipper Tom Rash won the toss and elected to field.

And Rash led from the front, taking two early wickets, with the experienced Peter Worthington also taking two, as Burwell were quickly reduced to 43 for four.

Tetley added 88 for the fifth wicket with South African all-rounder Tyron Koen (30), who was playing against his former team, and then 120 for the sixth wicket with Edward Hyde (56). Tetley was eventually the eighth wicket to fall, one of Matt Allen’s four late victims, having struck 123 off 104 balls.

Rash ended with figures of three for 70, off 14 overs, while Allen ripped through the late order with 4.3-1-16-4.

Reed put Mildenhall on the front foot with an entertaining 63 off 54 balls, with two sixes and 12 fours, and Maiolo struck 13 fours in his 69, although it was former Mistley all-rounder Stamatis who saw the visitors to victory in style.

Stamatis hit two sixes and 14 fours in his 80-ball 100 not out, having put on 111 for the third wicket with Maiolo, and an unbroken 61 for the fifth wicket with Rash (23 not out).

“For the first time in ages, we managed to get some early wickets, and that really helped,” said club captain Shepperson.

“Joe (Reed) then really won us the game with his great start to our innings. He’s very hit-and-miss, but when he’s on-song, he sets things up for us.

“James (Stamatis) has been very impressive for us this season. He’s only 18, and yet is a good example to the youngsters. In the end, time was never an issue, because it’s such a small ground.”
