James Reiss has named a competitive Aldeburgh squad for the visit of Felixstowe Ferry in the quarter-final of the Stenson Shield on Saturday. It promises to be a keenly-fought match. Reiss misses the match because of a wedding, so Roger Taylor takes over as captain.
Aldeburgh blend youth and experience. Will Wright, Taylor and Nigel Robson are old hands at Stenson golf. Josh Robertson, Gregor Tait and the left-handed Arthur Patten are at the other end of the scale. In between are former leading PGA East Region professional James Keely and Ian Kitson.
Felixstowe’s experienced captain Neil Meadows relies on the players who beat Bungay in the second round. Three members of the Sayers family are included, Paul, his son Ben and Steve. Greg Hills is a valuable acquisition from Newton Green while former Welsh Boys’ captain Rhodri Harston, Jimmy Price and Billy MacLeod are seasoned Stenson campaigners.
Ipswich bring in some big guns for their visit to Bury St Edmunds. Paul Barnard returns after missing the victory over Diss. Cornwall county player Chris Fleming gets his opportunity. He was runner-up in last year’s Cornwall Amateur Championship held at Newquay. Bury are solid at home while Ipswich will be anxious to shake off the recent tag of being under achievers.
Former Suffolk captain Matt Fordham drops out of the Bury St Edmunds squad because of injury. His place is taken by Chris Driscoll, a three-handicapper from Canons Brook who plans to start his PGA training in October attached to Bury St Edmunds and is at present working in the pro shop.

Hintlesham look strong at the top of their order with Suffolk Open champion Sam Debenham, Suffolk captain Jack Cardy, former two-time Open champion Adrian Meredith and county player James Jones. They look more vulnerable lower down the order.
They visit at Rookery Park team of which much the same can be said. Luke Thompson, Guy Mummery and Calvin Sherwood are all used to playing in golf at the top level. Much will depend on how the pairings work out. Mummery lost his singles at Fynn Valley but should have a new set of clubs to restore his confidence. Phil Hetherington comes in for Dwayne Barber.

The match between holders Woodbridge and Gorleston is a repeat of last year’s final at Diss. Woodbridge no longer have Jasper Johnson and James Tyler, now at Ipswich, or Josh Robertson who is playing for Aldeburgh.
Team captain Nathan Overton relies on the consistency of players like Toby Ayles and Tom Fowler. They face a depleted Gorleston side because several squad members will be at Royal Birkdale for the Open Championship.
Gorleston look to old-timers John Maddock, Steve Crosby, Geraint Amos and Kevin Woods at Bromeswell Heath. Missing from the Gorleston side that beat Haverhill at the first extra hole in the second round are Danny Perring, Daniel Crosby, Ben Leuty and Josh Manser.
