Flempton scored an impressive Stenson Shield second round victory over a strong Gorleston team by seven and a half matches to four and a half.

They achieved this notable result despite their Suffolk Open champion, Alfie Halil, being in Kent in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters.

Gorleston looked strong with in-form Danny Western fresh from winning the Seaton Robson Trophy at Aldeburgh the previous day.

Yet it was players like James Hurst, who held Western to a half, and the return of Mark Rea to competitive golf that laid the foundation for this success.

Now Flempton must visit Woodbridge, last season’s losing finalists, who had too much strength in depth for Halesworth.

Ipswich proved too good for Rushmere in the derby match. The visitors led by three after the foursomes. By the time Ian Brown, Jasper Johnson and Chris Bye had won the top three singles Ipswich were over the winning line. The other matches paled into insignificance and halves were agreed in three of them.

With Jack Phillips back from the United States, Ipswich look a powerful squad.

Felixstowe Ferry made short work of Diss, several of the singles being one-sided.

Diss were without James Biggs who was playing in The Berkshire Trophy in which he finished tied 17th after being in contention at the start of the final round. He scored 71 66 72 and 79. Josh Driver withdrew after hurting his wrist playing football.

Felixstowe’s Paul Waring missed the cut in The Berkshire.

One of the best matches of the day came at Bungay where Haverhill recovered from a 3-1 lunch-time deficit to win on the final green when David Spittle secured the par he needed to beat Steed Hubbard.

Bury St Edmunds look to have a solid squad which won at Stowmarket. They are happy to give young players a chance with Michael Gee unbeaten on the day. Max Adams beat former Suffolk stalwart Paul Buckle with a birdie on the final green after having been three down.

Although they were level at lunch Rookery Park proved no match for Hintlesham who avenged last year’s defeat. Rookery struggled in the singles.

Thorpeness had only six players at Newton Green. They put up a brave fight to claim four wins with Lee and Sam Newton beating James Cooper and Harvey Watts 6 and 5.
